Choosing the best over ear noise cancelling headphones requires comparing specific technical details. We analyzed 15 models ranked by their published specifications. The Beats Studio Pro Renewed Wireless Headphones lead this list for renewed buyers seeking lossless audio, thanks to its USB-C connectivity and active noise cancellation. Every pick here is based strictly on the data provided in the product listings, including fit, connection type, and key features. This guide helps you decide which pair matches your needs for comfort, sound quality, and daily use.
Check connection type and back design first
Most options here are wireless with active noise cancelling. However, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO is wired and open-back. This design choice limits noise isolation but aids studio mixing. If you need portability and silence, stick to the wireless closed-back models like the Bose QuietComfort series. Verify your connection needs before buying.

If your listening environment does not require active noise cancellation, you can compare specifications for the best over ear headphones.
How we picked these headphones
We identified these models by scanning Amazon listings for the Over-Ear fit specification. We only included products where the listing explicitly states this fit type in the title or feature list. We selected a single variant from each product family to keep the comparison clear and focused on the specific hardware details available for that configuration. This ensures you see the exact specifications for the version you might purchase.
We ordered the final list by checking stock availability first, so in-stock items appear at the top. Next, we sorted by the listing’s overall rating, weighted by the number of ratings. Finally, we considered how many of our core criteria the published specs met. All data comes directly from the product pages. We did not test these items physically.
Choosing the Right Over-Ear ANC Headphones
Check the Back Design
The back design determines how sound interacts with your environment. Open-back models like the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO allow air and sound to pass through. This creates a natural, spacious soundstage ideal for studio mixing or critical listening. However, it offers no passive noise isolation. If you need silence in noisy environments, choose closed designs. The Beyerdynamic is wired, which suits stationary use but limits portability for daily commutes.
Verify Wireless Connectivity
Most top picks use wireless connections for convenience. The Bose QuietComfort and Sony WH1000XM5 both support Bluetooth for easy pairing with your devices. Wireless freedom allows you to move without cable constraints. Ensure the model includes Bluetooth if you plan to use it with smartphones or tablets. Some specialized studio headphones remain wired. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO uses a wired connection, prioritizing signal fidelity over the convenience of wireless movement.
Evaluate Active Noise Cancellation
Active Noise Cancellation uses microphones to reduce ambient sounds. This feature is standard in most premium over-ear models listed here. The Bose QuietComfort and Apple AirPods Max 2 both include this technology. It helps you focus in loud places like airplanes or offices. If you need silence, prioritize models with this badge. The Skullcandy Crusher Evo lacks active cancellation, relying instead on physical sound isolation, which suits bass enthusiasts who prefer tactile feedback over electronic noise reduction.
Consider Weight and Comfort
Weight impacts long-term wear comfort. Heavier models may cause fatigue during extended sessions. The Apple AirPods Max 2 weighs 13.6 ounces, which is substantial for all-day use. In contrast, the Bose QuietComfort 2nd Gen weighs just 8 ounces. The Sony WH1000XM5 weighs 1 pound. Lighter options are better for travel or daily commuting. Check the weight specification to ensure the headphones remain comfortable for your specific usage duration and environment.
Match Your Operating System
Compatibility affects feature availability and audio quality. The Beats Studio Pro supports lossless DSD audio and is noted for Android users. It offers cross-device compatibility for those using multiple platforms. Apple AirPods Max 2 integrates seamlessly with the Apple ecosystem, supporting spatial audio and live translation. If you use Android, verify that the headphones support your preferred codecs. The Beats Studio Pro Renewed also supports USB-C connectivity for high-fidelity wired listening alongside wireless options.
Frequently asked questions

Several models on this list support lossless audio. The Beats Studio Pro Renewed Wireless Headphones and Beats Studio Pro Wireless Over-Ear Headphones both offer this feature. The Beats Studio Pro also includes Lossless DSD support. The Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) similarly provide Lossless DSD capabilities for high-fidelity listening.
Are there wired options in this list?
Yes, there is one wired option. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 80 Ohm Headphones use a wired connection. This model is open-back, which is designed for studio mixing and critical listening rather than portable wireless use. All other listed models rely on wireless connectivity.
Do these headphones have active noise cancellation?
Most models feature active noise cancellation. The Beats Studio Pro, Bose QuietComfort, Sony WH1000XM5, and Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 all include this feature. However, the Skullcandy Crusher Evo uses sound isolating technology instead of active noise cancellation. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO is wired and open-back without active cancellation.
Which model is the lightest?
The Apple AirPods Max Over-Ear Headphones (Renewed) are listed at 1.12 ounces. This is the lowest weight among the provided specifications. For comparison, the Sony WH1000XM5 weighs 1 pound, and the Apple AirPods Max 2 weigh 13.6 ounces. Weight varies significantly across these wireless and wired designs.
Do any headphones support spatial audio?

Are there headphones suitable for Android users?

What is the difference between open-back and closed designs?
Open-back designs, like the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO, allow sound and air to pass through. This creates a natural soundstage ideal for studio mixing but offers less noise isolation. Closed or wireless models with active noise cancellation, such as the Bose QuietComfort, provide better isolation for travel and daily use.
